I’m Max Humphrey, an interior designer based in Portland, Oregon.
I grew up in the New Hampshire woods and went to film school in Boston. From there, I moved to Los Angeles and worked in TV and film production. Taking a unique turn, I moved on to tour the US and England as the bass player in a punk rock band signed to a major record label. Years later, I discovered an interest in interior design and determined a career change was in order. I spent the next 10 years designing homes all over LA, and in 2016, I moved to Portland to launch my own design firm.
I have an office in the downtown Pearl District and have designed residential projects all over the USA, including all points in Oregon, from Bend to Portland to Oregon wine country, and the coast, Lake Tahoe, up and down California, Washington DC, Boston, and more.
Commercial and hospitality project commissions have included the Two Capes glamping report in Pacific City, Oregon; the corporate headquarters for Umpqua Bank in Lake Oswego; the 19 Acres hard cider tasting room; the Arborbrook by Cooper Mountain Vineyards tasting room; a dental office in Downtown Los Angeles; a mobile coffee shop built out of an Airstream trailer for a beverage conglomerate; model units for a Pearl District luxury condo and a SE Portland mixed-use development; a food truck for a PNW burger chain; and a podcast studio in New York City.
I was a featured ‘Next Wave’ designer in House Beautiful magazine, and I was named one of Country Living’s 100 most creative people. Other recent press has included features in Architectural Digest, Domino, Dwell, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and as one of Apartment Therapy’s design change-makers.
I have licensed product collaborations with a number of décor brands, including furniture with Old Hickory, fabric with Sunbrella, enamelware with Crow Canyon, wallpaper with Chasing Paper, window treatments with Hartmann & Forbes, candles with Good & Well Supply Company, and more on the way.
My first book, Modern Americana, was released in 2021, and my latest book is called Lodge: An Indoorsy Tour of America’s National Parks.
